Caring for your skin in summer involves making certain changes to your daily skincare routine. Summer temperatures and the increased exposure to UV rays cause instant reactions to the complexion: redness, tightness, shine, etc. Here are a few useful tips to help protect and maintain your skin’s natural glow throughout summer.
1) Use a Gentle Face Wash
Your skin tends to get oilier and more sensitive during the hot summer months. It is, therefore, vital to treat it gently. Ditch the aggressive cleansers if you don’t want to strip your skin of its natural moisture and protective barrier. Instead, opt for a gentle cleanser to rinse your face thoroughly twice a day.
For instance, at night, try double cleansing with an oil-based cleanser followed by a gentle aqueous one like micellar water or a foaming face wash to get rid of all makeup, dust and all other impurities caught into the skin throughout the day. This will help keep your face fresh and refines the texture of the skin.
2) Hydrate the Skin
This is something you hear everywhere; hydration is key to keeping your skin looking and feeling healthy throughout your whole life! In summer, moisturizing the face will enable your skin to recover from the effects of heat and restore its delicate balance without causing premature aging.
As you are probably aware, the first step to hydrating your skin is… to drink water! This is especially true in summer. You should be drinking regularly throughout the day, without waiting to feel thirsty to have some water. Besides, you can also have fresh juices (cucumber, for example, is very moisturizing) and herbal teas.
Despite the hot weather, you should not stop moisturizing your skin. However, you must opt for lighter moisturizers during this time of the year. For a natural skincare routine, you can apply Aloe Vera gel each morning, a wonderful plant with intense hydrating properties and gentle to the skin. Its light gel texture is ideal for use in summer. In the evening, massage some drops of Argan oil into your face.
3) Take Your Antioxidants
Do you live in the city? Don’t forget your antioxidants to prevent damage to your skin! The polluted urban air can be 100 times more harmful than cigarette smoke, particularly on hot summer days when toxins reach their peak levels. Sometimes you might even feel stressed out and experience dry, tight skin after a day out in the city. The unstable oxygen molecules in polluted air can lead to destructive reactions on the skin and accelerate aging. As a result, you might start noticing wrinkles, large pores, and other premature signs of aging. Using antioxidants such as vitamins E and C will help protect the healthy structure of the skin.
4) Moisturize Around the Eyes
The skin around the eye area is 4 times thinner and more delicate than the rest of the face. It gets dehydrated quickly, and that’s where you will notice the early signs of aging such as dark circles and fine lines. While a simple moisturizer is always better than nothing, it is preferable to apply specific eye contour products as they offer numerous benefits. In the morning, dot the cream on your eye area and massage gently using your ring finger. Before you head out, wear your sunglasses and hat to prevent dryness and other issues around the eyes.
5) Don’t Forget the Lips!
The skin of the lips has no sweat glands meaning that it does not have the same protection as the rest of the skin. That’s why lips become dry faster and crack more easily. Dry lips often lack moisture, age rapidly, and become thinner. To keep your lips moist and plump, select a lip balm with rejuvenating emollients and natural oils to apply daily.
