Do you want your hair to look healthy and shiny, just like the celebrities? Here are 4 essential hair care tips and tricks you can use that will help you stay away from all the frustrating hair problems (such as split ends, tangles, etc.), and at the same time make it strong, healthy and shiny…
1. Don’t Over Shampoo
While we all need to shampoo regularly to get rid of excess oil, dirt, and product build-up, shampooing also removes the necessary oils from your scalp. And this leads to dry, frizzy hair that loses its shine and bounce.
Most women should wash their hair three to four times a week at most except for African American women, whose hair is different and should only wash them once or twice a week at most.
To shampoo your hair correctly, ignore the “lather, rinse, repeat” directions. Choose a shampoo that is designed for the kind of hair you have. Soak your hair completely with warm water, and then apply just enough shampoo to work up a good lather. Rinse all the lather out. Only repeat the shampooing if the first wash were not enough to clean out all the dirt and oil.
2. Tips on Conditioning Your Hair
The purpose of a hair conditioner is to help make hair easier to comb and have fewer tangles. It works by adding moisture and coating the hair shaft.
When it comes to choosing a hair conditioner, make sure you choose one that’s for your hair type, as some conditioners work best for those with normal hair, while other conditioners work best for those with weak hair that needs strengthening.
So, how do you use the hair conditioner? We noticed that many ladies simply apply the hair conditioner on their hair and rinse it out immediately. That is not the correct way to condition your hair – You will need to leave it on for some time for it to “work”:
After you wash your hair, apply enough hair conditioner to lightly coat the hair. Then, use a wide-toothed comb to work the condition through to the ends, gently de-tangling your hair as you go. Leave the conditioner in your hair for about two to three minutes before you rinse them off.
Finally, how often should you use the hair conditioner? It depends on your hair condition: If your hair is generally healthy and well-hydrated, you need not use your hair conditioner every single time you shampoo your hair (you can condition your hair approximately twice or thrice a week). Do not over-condition your hair because if you do, you may find that it eventually becomes flat and limp.
3. What to Do When Your Hair Is Being Knotty
Tangled or knotty hair can be a real annoyance, especially if you are in a rush.
A spray crème rinse or detangler can be a lifesaver when applied lightly to your hair when its dried. What you can do is to separate your hair into small sections and then carefully comb through one section at a time, gently working out the tangles. Start at the ends and work your way up from section to section to avoid any hair breakages.
However, if that does not help in detangling your hair, here is what you need to do: You need to do a quick shampoo, and then apply your hair conditioner as you normally would. Next, comb through gently with a wide toothed comb as described above, doing one section at a time, and work at loosening the tangles. That should help to detangle your hair.
One more thing to note about knotty hair is this: If it’s at all avoidable, don’t leave your hair tangle any longer than you have to, as they will only get worse and matted if left too long. Large tangles will then show up and make you look unkempt.
4. Minimizing the Damage
If you like to spend a lot of time in swimming pools, you know what chlorine can do on your hair. Not only will it dry out and damage your hair, it can also turn your hair green. The best solution is avoiding the problem completely by wearing a swim cap. If that is not an option, look for shampoo and conditioners that are made to fix chlorine damage.
Another thing to note here is that, any time you use heat on your hair, whether from a flat iron, hot curlers, or a blow dryer, you are taking a risk of doing damage to your hair. Too much heat will “fry” your hair, living it frizzy and dried out. Shampoos and conditioners made for over processed hair will help, as well as using a leave in conditioner each week to help repair the damage.
Finally, remember that you might need to change your shampoo and conditioner combo each season. Reason being, the products you use in the summer while you’re spending time in the sun and swimming in pools will be different from the product you need in the winter when you spend most of the day indoors. And no matter how healthy your hair is, you can nip many problems in the bud by treating it to a deep conditioner each month.
